The Henna Ceremony

In Morocco, henna is more than adornment. Made from the plant Lawsonia inermis, it carries baraka — blessing, protection and continuity. It accompanies women through life’s passages: birth, marriage, celebration and remembrance.

Traditionally, the henna ceremony is preceded by ritual cleansing in the hammam. Using black soap, clay and ancestral herbal blends, the body is purified and prepared. This act of washing is not only physical — it marks transition — a conscious step from one phase of life into another.

During the ceremony, hands and feet are adorned with protective symbols — local signs, geometric patterns, flowing lines — each carrying meaning. Songs are sung, stories are shared, and blessing is passed from woman to woman.

Tradition continues to evolve. Ancient protective signs now coexist with contemporary interpretations, yet the essence remains the same: connection, dignity, and shared memory.

The Workshop Experience

This workshop is guided by a professional henna artist from the region — a woman who practices her craft at celebrations and who sustains this knowledge through her daily work.

In a respectful and intimate setting, you will:

🌸 practice hand application techniques

🌸 discover plant-based cosmetic rituals used by local women

The experience is practical, personal and grounded in exchange. You are not observing a performance — you are learning directly from a woman whose work keeps this tradition alive.

Program

Upon arrival at our desert camp near M’Hamid, you are welcomed with tea and traditional food. The experience begins with a desert-style hammam — a moment of cleansing and preparation before the henna workshop.

After the ceremony and a shared meal prepared from local organic ingredients, the evening continues around the fire beneath the vast desert sky. In the stillness of the Sahara night, you experience silence, stars and space.

You spend the night in a traditional and comfortable earthen hut at the camp. At dawn, you are invited to witness the sunrise over the dunes before breakfast and departure.

 Includes: Henna workshop, hammam ritual, organic Moroccan cuisine, overnight accommodation, evening fire and sunrise experience, translation, and transfer from and back to Zagora or M’Hamid in modern, well-maintained vehicles.

Our Approach

This workshop follows our commitment to responsible, low-impact travel.
Group sizes are small. Local women are fairly compensated . Traditional knowledge is shared with consent and dignity. Transport is organized safely with experienced local drivers, and we aim to respect the nature and the community that hosts us.
